Discription (English)

What appeals to me most about Ton Smits’ work is that he highlights a problem or topic in a humorous way. The hand drawn lines fired my imagination. How do I turn something that is normally 2D into a 3D object?

I think the subject of traveling and looking for something is a great for Ton Smits. A journey can mean a journey through the life of Ton Smits or a journey through, for example, the exhibition where this ‘Eyecatcher’ will be placed. I translated the making of this fictional journey into a design for a bus stop. A bus stop is a place where a journey begins (start of an exhibition) and where people can sit quietly and reflect on the journey and all the impressions they have gained along the way.

The map of the bus stop contains the following quote: “Where do i find the comics?” This has a double message. It refers to the journey and it is located where the information indicated on the sign (map). It is also a reference to the work of Ton Smits.

Because Ton Smits is a cartoonist and the work he makes is handmade. There is a certain unpredictability in this. I have reflected this unpredictability because the construction of the Eyecatcher is covered with an Epoxy clay that is applied by hand. It looks like the bus stop has escaped from a cartoon.

The location of the bus stop can also strengthen the concept because it can be placed in unexpected places (guerrilla art). By placing this bus stop in unexpected / remote places, the bus stop, together with the text “Where do i find the comics”, gets a humorous twist.
